Architectural Housing Trends of 2017

Architectural Housing Trends of 2017

It is now 2018, meaning we have another year of architectural trends to review. In this post, we will look at some of the most popular architectural housing styles and designs of 2017 and see how likely they are to stand the test of time.

Timber and Wood

The use of timber and wood has never been more on-trend than in 2017. Whether it was part-constructing a house using wood, or using the material as decorative accents throughout the interior, timber and wood have been a favourable choice recently and it could be that the trend might be here to stay.

Wood and timber have proven a common choice for architectural design not only because of the practical elements, such as it being a lighter material, easier to work with and can be a renewable material when sourced correctly, but also the visual aesthetic.

Cross laminated timber, also known as CLT, is being used more and more frequently due to its strength, sustainability and thanks to it overcoming a lot of issues traditionally linked to wood.

It seems that the popularity of timber and wood in architectural design is on the rise for both its practicality and appearance; therefore this trend seems likely to continue into 2018. Here are some grey living room ideas that you might like.

Exposed Brick

Similarly to the timber and wood trend, an architectural style that has been used more frequently in recent years and seemed to take off especially in 2017, is the use of exposed brick. This rustic and earthy style is a simple, yet effective way of adding character to any home.

As well as being pleasing on the eye, brick walls are durable and virtually maintenance-free. This architectural element brings together both tradition and contemporary decor, whether they are left natural or painted. The contrast of different furniture textures and colours against the exposed brick adds a quirky aspect and establishes individuality, creating an overall unique look.

The warm and welcoming atmosphere produced by exposed brick could ensure the continued popularity of this trend.

Large Scale Windows

The increase in demand for large-scale windows was on the rise in 2017 for those who were looking for a sleek, modern design that maximises natural light in the home. Designs such as floor to ceiling, sliding glass and large block-panelling windows have been some of the most sought-after designs during 2017.

A popular architectural concept of ‘transitional living’, the design of combining both indoor and outdoor living, has been a leading trend amongst architectural window design. With a minimalistic yet chic appearance, large-scale windows give a much more open and spacious effect, even on some of the smallest rooms.

Large-scale windows are more than likely not going anywhere anytime soon. For practical and visual reasons, we will probably see this trend continue to thrive.

Smart Homes

Each year we are introduced to increasingly advanced technology and for many of us, it is part of everyday life. Therefore, Smart aspects are being regularly added to homes and becoming part of architectural design.

Whether it’s adjusting lights, automated window furnishings, or heating and electrics controlled by your tablet, Smart Homes appear to be the future. Of course, it comes at a price and not everybody is prepared to pay just to be able to turn their lights on by asking nicely.

However, it seems that each year, technology in the home is becoming the norm and 2017 was no exception. This suggests that this trend will continue to grow and in not so many years time, we could all be talking to our light fixtures.

Eco-Friendly

Creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyle has never been more important to an increasing number of people. That’s why 2017 architecture saw more eco-friendly elements included in the design of houses.

People are conscious of creating and establishing a better environment for the future and are taking the plunge by investing in greener options for their homes. Emphasis on preserving and generating greener energy has been a big focus, whether that is through natural lighting and heating, better insulation or more efficient water and energy appliances.

Going green in 2017 has been a really positive architectural trend, not only on housing but also the environment; we hope to see this continue to grow in popularity throughout 2018 and longer.
