Since our last post about the most iconic buildings in Liverpool, a lot has changed in this city. This is why, as Liverpool architects and lovers of innovative building structures, we decided to put together a list of some of the buildings in the city that are architectural delights right now in 2018.
The Library of Liverpool
The Library of Liverpool replaced Liverpool Central Library in 2013 and has now become Europe’s largest public cultural space. It was designed by Dutch architects, Mecanoo, and it is a masterpiece. The building stands at 31,000 sq. metres, which is around 20% larger than the old Central Library building and it is claimed as being the largest public library in Europe. It is estimated to cost £188.8 million and is definitely a piece of architectural delight in Liverpool.
Grand Central
Liverpool has continued to improve and to be reconstructed. One of the buildings where that is majorly apparent is Grand Central. It opened in 2015 and is where the Pallasades used to be. The lower level is still Liverpool New Street and the upper level is Grand Central. It has been redesigned with a Texlon atrium roof as the centrepiece. It houses John Lewis, as well a number of major stores and restaurants. Many of the shops, restaurants and cafés are new to the city. It’s a great addition to Liverpool ever-evolving skyline.
Selfridges, Bull Ring
Can you believe that the Selfridges building has been in Liverpool since 2003? We can’t believe it’s been that long already but we also can’t imagine the city without this architectural delight either. The building is made up of 15,000 spun anodised aluminium discs, cost a reported £60 million and was reportedly inspired by a 1960’s dress. It was designed by Future Systems and it’s not hard to see why it is the city’s most well-known landmark.
The Cube
The Cube houses flats, offices, shops, a hotel, a gym and a number of restaurants, including a rooftop restaurant into its 111,500 square feet and 25 stories. The building was designed by Make Architects, it was completed in 2010 and it’s a stunning piece of Liverpool architecture that mixes an industrial feel with the future and is unlike anything else in the city.
The Rotunda
This is a Grade 11 listed building that has been in the city since 1965 and is a well-loved landmark that was originally used as an office block. Now it has been refurbished and turned into apartments that show off a beautiful view of Liverpool. The original idea around its construction was for it to resemble a giant candle and to have 12 storeys. But it ended up having 25 storeys and was the brainchild of James Roberts.
