LIVERPOOL ONE - ICONIC 22 STOREY TOWER IS A FIRST FOR LIVERPOOL
13 Jun 2006
GROSVENORS 900 million pounds Liverpool One development is to become home to an iconic 22-storey tower block designed by US-based architect,Cesar Pelli.
The building is Cesar Pelli’s first commission in Liverpool and will provide a stunning the gateway to Grosvenor’s retail-led regeneration of Liverpool city centre. It will also form a key cornerstone of the development’s revitalised 5-acre Chavasse Park. The Park’s remaining corner plot will be a building containing a hotel and apartments.
Cesar Pelli, whose architecture practice is based in Connecticut, US, is best known for designing the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, which at 452m, was the tallest building in the world upon its completion in 1998.
Pelli’s Liverpool One tower block will range in height from nine to 22-storeys, and will be the tallest structure in the development. The building will feature a concrete frame and steel and glass façade. It is anticipated that it will house 330 apartments, offices, a restaurant and café complex facing the Park.
William Butler, a partner in Pelli Clark Pelli, said: “We are delighted to be working in Liverpool for the first time and Cesar Pelli has applied his well-established philosophy to the building.
“All Pelli Clark Pelli buildings are unique because they are designed specifically, for an individual site. We believe that our building, which has been designed exclusively for the development’s Chavasse Park will, alongside the new crescent-shaped hotel, form a fantastic frame for Liverpool One.”
The Pelli team is working in partnership with Liverpool-based architects Brock Carmichael. London-based architect Michael Squire is designing the crescent-shaped hotel.
Rodney Holmes, Grosvenor project director, commented: “We believe these two buildings will look magnificent along Wapping. The development is being promoted by Grosvenor, but there is a possibility of a duel partnership for one or both of the buildings. We are currently in detailed negotiations with a number of potential partners.”
