PARADISE PROJECT ACHIEVES MAJOR MILESTONE WITH DEMOLITION OF MOAT HOUSE

16 May 2005

The Paradise Project reached another major milestone today, as work began on the demolition of the Moat House Hotel on Paradise Street.

A ‘family’ of three long reach machines of varying sizes went into action to begin dismantling sections of the Moat House, which will make way for a new multi-screen cinema and other leisure uses, (part of the proposed John Lewis Building also runs into the area).   In between times, the removal of the Moat House will temporarily open up views to the Mersey that have not been seen for several years.

The demolition process will take around eight weeks during which time the long reach machines will remove the hotel’s concrete structure, working from the top down.  State-of-the-art dust compression technology will significantly reduce the spread of dust particles around the site by spraying the building with substantial jets of water and creating a perimeter of mist.  Quantities of debris will be taken off site, recycled and incorporated into the completed development.

“The Moat House has been a feature of the city for a long time.  Its demolition marks a significant moment in the Paradise Project construction programme.  With every occasion of this nature, we take one step closer to realising the regeneration of the Paradise Street area,” said Rod Holmes, Grosvenor’s project director.

Since November 2004, when the project started on-site, a great deal has been achieved. The new bus station in Canning Place and the new multi-storey John Lewis car park are on target to complete towards the end of this year.  The next major stages of the programme concentrate on beginning the construction of the proposed Debenhams and John Lewis flagship stores.
