Citys Magnificent Seven winner
17 May 2007
THREE Merseyside projects won architectural plaudits at a Manchester awards ceremony last night.
They were among seven buildings featured in the Royal Institute of British Architects awards and regional chair Roger Stephenson praised them, saying: “The shortlist and the magnificent seven winners demonstrate once again the remarkably high standard of architecture in the north west.”
The three winners were new swimming facilities at Formby pool, the Unity Building in Liverpool’s Chapel Street and the Liver Street car park, within the Paradise Project, which judges praised, saying: “Although this is a tough building type and the materials necessarily harsh, the jury felt this was a powerful contribution to the rapidly growing urban context in which it stands, well conceived and carefully positioned.”
Other winning projects from 26 nominated schemes and a 12-strong shortlist were in Altrincham, Blackpool, Burnley and Manchester.
The winners go through to the Riba national awards in London next month, which form the longlist for the Riba Stirling prize.
